Society’s Need For Science Graduates
When it comes to finding a good job after graduating with a degree in the sciences, you need to deal with a balancing act.
On the one hand, the accumulation of scientific knowledge can be of great help to society and the acquiring of knowledge was probably one of the big motivating factors in your choosing science as your vocation. On the other hand, it is the application of science to consumer goods that will end up getting you a paycheck.
So, how do you manage to get a good, well-paying job in the field of science? In theory it is pretty simple: figure out how society needs science.
One of the biggest ways in which science will play a big part in everyday life is coming in a few years. The baby-boomer generation is starting to reach retirement age and in a decade or so there will be giant demand for products that help these aging boomers stay healthy.
For those who are recent or soon-to-be graduates with science degrees, this opens a lot of doors. First and most obvious is medical technology. As the baby-boomer generation ages, there will be a great need to quality and cost-effective medical devices. These devices can be medical equipment or they can be related to living a regular life while dealing with the effects of aging.
Take a look around the room you are sitting in. How would the use of the things in that room change as you aged? Maybe new materials could be developed to make a more comfortable show. Maybe a simpler interface could be designed for complex electronics. If you look hard enough, you could find myriad ways in which the retirement and the aging of the boomer generation will affect the development of science.
And where there is a need, there will be companies creating products to fill that need. And those companies will need switched on employees.
Here’s a quick way to find some companies that may be hiring. Do a web search for products related to the elderly. Find the big brand names in those results and then check out their website. Odds are, you will find employment opportunities.
These opportunities may require that you relocate, but that is a reality in pretty much every industry. If you can get started with some of these companies now, then in ten or fifteen years, you will be an indispensable employee who has a very promising career.
