Also, I’ve read that Chemistry students tend to specialize in a type of Chemistry in Grad School, are there any students who specialize or gain further degrees in the Chemistry of Explosives? Similar to what Alfred Nobel did.

Would like to be successful in chemistry?

After thirty years of teaching hundreds of chemistry students, I have discovered that success in chemistry has nothing to do with special abilities or superior intelligence.

Success in chemistry is directly related to your attitude.

It doesn’t matter what your skills are if you have a poor attitude; you will not succeed. You must develop and maintain a positive attitude toward your chemistry class and teacher. But, if you can accomplish this, you will be successful at chemistry.

Your attitude toward chemistry is completely under your control. No one can make you think anything you don’t want to think. So, the first thing you need to do is get control of your thoughts. If you say, “chemistry is hard”, it will be hard. If you say, “I will never pass chemistry” then you won’t pass chemistry. The mind is very powerful and will function according to how you feed it. If you feed it negative thoughts you will get negative results. You must be aware of your thoughts and if they are negative, change them. No one else can do it for you.

The key to a having a good attitude is the willingness to change and you can start changing your attitude by changing your vocabulary.

Eliminate these thoughts:

• I can’t
• I don’t think
• Maybe
• I’m afraid of
• I don’t believe
• I don’t have the time
• It’s impossible

Adopt these words

• I can
• I will
• Positively
• I am confident
• I do believe
• I will make the time
• All things are possible

Finally, you must not let what other people think about you, determine your reality. Just because someone says you can’t do something doesn’t mean you have to accept his or her opinion. All that truly matters is what you believe. Don’t let other people set your limits or your goals.

But, knowing what to do is only the beginning. Success doesn’t just happen. You must take action. You need to do something, now. Do anything, but don’t let things just happen.

Begin developing your attitude by monitoring your thoughts and speech. Sit down and write out a plan, then put it on your calendar. Or better yet, do something you have put off because you were afraid you would fail. It really doesn’t matter what you do as long as you take action now.

Preparing for your chemistry class is a lot like preparing for a sport. You must have discipline, you must develop certain skills and you must practice, practice, practice. No athlete would dream of competing without mastering the skills required for their sport. Likewise, no chemistry student should expect to pass chemistry if they haven’t mastered the required skills and put in the time for practice.

Chemistry requires certain skills, you must learn these skills, practice them and find your mistakes. When you find a weak area you must develop a way to strengthen that area. You must be aware of your mistakes, correct them and learn from them. So, here are the three most common mistakes made by chemistry students. Learn to avoid them.

Mistake #1 – Don’t learn any algebra skills.

Although there are many conceptual ideas in chemistry, if you plan to master chemistry you must have a working knowledge of simple algebra, scientific notation and significant figures . You should be able to write and manipulate the variables in formulas and equations. You should be able to write equations from simple word problems, balance those equations and write your answers in scientific notation.

Avoid this mistake by taking a refresher course in algebra or purchase a book on simple algebra.

Mistake #2 – Don’t learn the Periodic table.

The periodic table is one of the greatest scientific tools ever discovered. It contains a wealth of information about each and everyone of the elements. For each element you can find the:

• atomic number
• atomic mass
• energy levels
• electron arrangements
• valence electrons

and so much more. It is a must to how to use the periodic table. You don’t have to memorize it, but the more you know about the more time you save.

Avoid this mistake buy getting a tutor or book that will explain the mysteries of the periodic table.

Mistake #3 – Don’t learn the metric system.

This is one of the biggest mistakes chemistry students make when learning chemistry and physics. Just because you might be used to the English system of units doesn’t mean you can ignore the metric system. Although the official measuring system is the SI units, this system is based on the metric system. Therefore, you need to know what metric amounts look like and how to use and manipulate them.

Avoid this mistake by getting a handout, a book or tutor that can help you practice measuring and converting in metrics.

Everyone should take chemistry. It is important and it is a lot easier than you think. Most people do not need chemistry help. But there is a lot of chemistry help out on the internet for those who do. There are chemistry videos, chemistry help for homework, and chemistry blogs.

The hardest part of chemistry is realizing that you just have to memorize some stuff. It may never make sense to you, but if you can memorize it you can then figure out other stuff. For example, memorize “protons are positive” and “like repels like”. Then you can answer “do protons repel each other and if so why?” The answer is “‘protons are positive’ and ‘like repels like’ so positive protons repel positive protons.”

Many chemistry help sites offer ideas on how to pass chemistry. Usually this advice has nothing at all to do with chemistry. They say: study, do your homework, ask questions…. but they do not offer any real chemistry help. Did you really need to hear this? You have heard this about every other course, it should be not surprise that studying and homework help you pass chemistry.

We on the other hand, only offer chemistry help. If you do not already know that you must study…well we can’t help you there, it’s probably too late. You can pass chemistry by memorizing a few select items, learning some simple algebra, and learning to count electrons. If you memorize nitrate = NO3- then you will not be confused when you hear nitrate, you will know what it means. Memorize 1 mole = 602 billion trillion.

Some concepts in chemistry can be difficult and many times are explained poorly. The concept of a mole can be deeply confusing to new chemistry students. Some teachers (but not all of them) will offer more technical explanations when many times the student only needs a simpler explanation.
